Hi Kane - tell us a little bit about yourself: Who are you and what do you do for fun?
I live in Melbourne, Australia, and am an animal lover! I spend a couple hours a day walking and socialising rescue dogs.
What do you do for a living and how long have you been in this industry?
I’m a developer - I’ve been in the space for about eight years now. What brought you to egghead in the first place? Angular, actually.
I saw a talk by Miško Hevery a number of years ago and thought, “That looks cool, but insanely hard. I wonder if anyone has some videos on it!”
Sure enough, I found egghead. :)
What are some big successes you’ve had recently?
Last year my team and I were knee deep in a Cordova based project, struggling with the limitations of the platform. Everything was written in Angular, and despite our best intentions, the code became tangled and unmanageable over time.
When React Native was announced for Android, we knew that we had to make the switch straight away. Our team sat in a room for a week, watching everything egghead had on React and React Native - especially the test driven content.
Armed with a powerful new toolkit and the skills to use it, we were able to make a complete rewrite of our app in less than a month and launch a new web-based version of the product. While there were a few rough edges initially, we were able to iterate on the bugs with the help of user feedback and get the app to a polished, useable state.
After the re-launch, our Weekly Active Users skyrocketed, up 600% in the first month!
“The Big Rewrite” is usually the end of an app - especially when switching to a new technology.
Usually you need to drive into the potholes to learn your way around a new toolkit. But by having egghead’s videos as a reference, we were able to stand on the shoulders of giants and ultimately deliver an experience that delighted our users.
What are you most excited about for your career in 2016?
I'm super excited to be launching my next product, an app.
Armed with the experience and knowhow of React and React Native, I'm confident my team and I can ship a quality product quickly and iterate rapidly to deliver an amazing experience for our customers.
I'm also waiting for Egghead to do something on Elm! ;-)
